Hace unos años un hotel sustentable era una construcción de madera sin luz eléctrica en medio de la selva. Como parte de los esfuerzos por contrarrestar los daños causados al planeta, sin embargo, el ecodiseño ha evolucionado a pasos agigantados. El Keating Hotel, de 35 habitaciones, recientemente premiado con el Earth-Minded Award (EMA), es un buen ejemplo: la sustentabilidad no es inmediatamente visible. El hotel ocupa un edificio de 1890 en el centro de San Diego y fue proyectado por el grupo Pininfarina –reconocidos diseñadores de Ferrari y Maserati. Estructuras antiguas conviven con mobiliario y elementos contemporáneos; el acero, pintado en colores vivos, contrasta con los muros antiguos de ladrillo. El carácter ecológico del diseño proviene de la inteligente reutilización de estructuras, el uso de materiales reciclados y la aplicación de pinturas y selladores no tóxicos, además de un sistema integral que evitará el gasto innecesario de energía o de recursos. El Keating Hotel demuestra que puede ser acogedor sin renunciar a lo contemporáneo. Y ecológico sin renunciar a las comodidades.
