Let’s grab a cup of Coffee…’, used to mean something much different than it does today. Just a few short years ago, you could go to a convenience store or diner and just buy a cup of Coffee for $.75 and you were good. Ok, back up, ‘…a cup of Coffee for $.75?’ – yes, but like we said, things have changed.

If you are a lover of Coffee…like, GREAT Coffee, then you have seen how things have changed in the world of Coffee shops in the past decade…and yes, Coffee is its own world and we love it!

San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter and Little Italy are both neighborhoods that are home to some of the very best Coffee Shops in all of San Diego.

In our latest San Diego Travel Blog article – ‘San Diego Things to Do: Best Coffee Shops in San Diego’ we will introduce you to the very best Bean Brewers that you will want to visit during your next visit to ‘America’s Most Beautiful City.’

This list of ‘top picks’ for ‘Best Coffee Shops in San Diego’ are based on several lists of ‘Top 10 Best Coffee Shops’ and the ‘Highest Ranked’ Coffee Shops on Yelp. On this we are featuring only Coffee Shops and we tried to avoid listing Coffee Shops that specialized in serving food as well.

Now, let’s get to the list of ‘Best Coffee Shops in San Diego!’

Coava Coffee Roasters
Location: 400 West Broadway, San Diego, CA 92101
Website
Distance from The Keating: 1 Mile

The best Coffee Shops are managed by obsessive Coffee Lovers themselves. They are passionate about the Coffee the serve and the origin of the beans the brew. The creator of Coava Coffee is Matt Higgins who started the company in 2008. From its beginning Matt was committed to investing in partnerships that would ultimately produce the best Coffee possible. The result is Coffee that is some of the highest scoring Coffees in the world. Matt studied farm practices, agriculture and sustainable business to help him develop not only a great chain of Coffee roasters, but he wanted to understand what it took to plant, grow and develop the best Coffee beans. We think he accomplished his goal with Coava Coffee Roasters. Come by and see for yourself.

Copa Vida
Location: 655 West Broadway, San Diego, CA 92101
Website
Distance from The Keating: .7 Miles

Fantastic Coffees, amazing teas and great location in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. Oh yeah, and they have an Honor Bar from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.! Yep, and HONOR Bar, so you can pour your fresh cup of Coffee and leave the money for your cup and you are on your way…how cool is that? They also offer a variety of cold brew Coffee’s, great loose-leaf Tea’s, Kombucha and Espresso beverages. See the Website link above for the latest information, special offers and hours.

Blue Bottle Coffee
Location: 180 Broadway, Suite 101, San Diego, CA 92101
Website
Distance from The Keating: 6 Blocks

O.k., this beautiful, sleek spot just opened within 2 months of the publish date of this article and it deserves a place on our list! We love the minimalist design of this shop almost as much as we love the Coffee and pastries they serve. Blue Bottle Coffee is in the historic Tower 180 building that is a 1960’s era building that has been remodeled recently. The design of Blue Bottle is inspired by Japanese design elements, and rich walnut highlights. With locations in Kyoto, Tokyo Kobe and Seoul it is easy to understand the design influences. But now, back to the Coffee – it is great! Come try it for yourself…and ask for a freshly toasted Croissant…you will thank us later.

Lofty Coffee in Little Italy and Bakery
Location: 444 W. Cedar Street, San Diego, CA 92101
Website
Distance from The Keating: 1.2 Miles

Lofty Coffee is a great little Coffee Shop that is taking on the Coffee World…but what they do best is…everything, including GREAT Coffee and Coffee drinks, and some of the best fresh baked goods we tried in a long time. Do you remember the bakeries whose air around their building smelled of fresh baked breads, muffins and rolls? Yeah, we do to, and this is another reason we enjoyed our Organic Coffee and (two) Cheddar Croissants. See the Website link above for information on other locations, special offers and online purchases of their products.

Brickyard Coffee & Tea
Location: 675 G Street, San Diego, CA 92101
Distance from The Keating: 2 Blocks

This is a great little Coffee Shop located very near to the Convention Center and next to the Trolly Tracks. The outside seating makes the place a little bit more of ‘a favorite’ just because enjoying a freshly brewed cup of Coffee and a soft, fresh pastry is always better with eaten al fresco…don’t you think? Give Brickyard a try, we think you’ll enjoy it.

Elixir Espresso Bar
Location: 327 C Street, San Diego, CA 92101
Website
Distance from The Keating: 6 Blocks

Ohhh, we love this place. The European style décor and design is super cool and it even more special because the shop is in the old Marston Building that was once home to the Marston Family Department Store opened in 1896. There is even an original elevator in the back of the shop – how cool! This is a walk-up counter service Coffee Shop, but they serve Coffee and Espresso that is ground fresh from whole beans and this makes them taste very, very good.

Spill the Beans & Bagels
Location: 555 Market Street, San Diego, CA 92101
Website
Distance from The Keating: 3 Blocks

O.k., now this place is special to us. We said we wanted to feature only pure Coffee Shops and not bakeries that served Coffee…but let’s face it a great pastry goes perfectly if the Coffee is perfectly perfect! In this joint, they do Coffee & Bagels ‘right.’ First the Bagels are made from scratch each day so as you can imagine the place smells like baked heaven every day. Their amazing, freshly brewed Coffee made from freshly ground whole beans is the perfect beverage to enjoy one on their Bagels, either plain or with house made, fresh crème cheese or even an egg and bacon Bagel creation. Put ‘Spill the Beans’ on your list of ‘must try’ Coffee spots. You’ll thank us about this one too!
